Mini LED is essentially a backlight technology that does not change the basic principle of liquid crystalpl disay (LCD) images. Instead, it significantly improves the performance of the backlight "base plate" to make a qualitative leap in the image quality of LCD screens.
We can use a book analogy to help understand: Traditional LCDs are like placing a large desk lamp behind you, with light shining evenly, but unable to individually control the intensity of light for a certain word on the page. Mini LED, on the other hand, is like replacing a desk lamp with a "light wall" composed of thousands of small light beads that can be independently turned on and off. You can emphasize which part of the text you want, and only make that area brighter, while other parts can be dimmed or even turned off, making the contrast between bright and dark areas of the picture more vivid.
Definition of Mini LED: Small but in large quantities
The meaning of "Mini": It refers to the very small LED beads used in backlighting, typically ranging in size from 50 microns to 200 microns. As a comparison, the bead size of traditional LED backlighting is usually over 1 millimeter.
The essence of "multi partition": because the light beads can be made very small, thousands of them can be packed into one screen. More importantly, these numerous small light beads can be divided into independent "backlight zones", with the chip precisely controlling the brightness of each area.
How does Mini LED work?
Imagine dividing the screen into hundreds or even thousands of grids:
Ordinary LED backlight: It may only have dozens of zones, or no zones at all. When displaying the starry sky, even if a certain area is black, the lights behind it are still on, causing the black color to be not deep enough and the image to appear gray.
Mini LED backlight: When displaying the same starry sky, the corresponding star zones in the Mini LED backlight will be highlighted, while the zones corresponding to the dark universe can be completely turned off or dimmed.
This fine light control ability brings two most intuitive improvements in image quality:
Extremely high contrast: capable of presenting both deep black and dazzling highlights, achieving an ultra-high contrast of nearly 1000000:1.
Extremely high brightness: Mini LED beads are dense and can easily reach peak brightness of 1000 nits or even 1600 nits or more, which is crucial for presenting scenes such as explosions and sunrises in HDR (high dynamic range) content.
What are the advantages of Mini LED?
By combining Mini LED with the technology you have previously learned about, its positioning becomes very clear:
Compared to ordinary LCD, Mini LED provides contrast and brightness control capabilities that ordinary LCD cannot match, which is a major upgrade to traditional LCD displays.
Compared to OLED: Although OLED can also achieve pixel level light control, it has the risk of screen burn-in and brightness bottleneck. Mini LED inherits the advantages of long lifespan and high brightness of LCD, while also approaching the image quality performance of OLED infinitely through partitioned light control. It can be seen as "combining the lifespan of LCD and the image quality of OLED".
Typical application scenarios of Mini LED
This technology is becoming increasingly popular and is mainly applied in the following fields:
High end TVs such as Apple TCL、 Flagship models from brands such as Hisense and Sony bring the ultimate home theater experience.
Professional monitor: used for professional work such as video editing and photo post production, requiring high brightness and precise light control.
Tablets and laptops, such as Apple's iPad Pro and MacBook Pro, achieve desktop level HDR effects on mobile devices.
Overall, Mini LED technology, by miniaturizing LEDs and controlling them in different zones, not only retains the advantages of LCD, but also greatly compensates for its shortcomings in contrast. It is currently a very mainstream choice in the high-end display field.
